A key aspect of intelligence is the ability to quickly learn how to perform a new task when given a brief instruction. For example, a child can identify real animals at the zoo after seeing some pictures of the animals in a book, despite the differences between the two. But for a typical visual model to learn a new task, it would need to be trained on tens of thousands of examples labeled specifically for that task. If the goal is to count and identify the animals in an image, as in the “three zebras,” one would have to collect…

In our recent paper, we investigate how populations of deep reinforcement learning (deep RL) agents can learn microeconomic behaviors such as production, consumption, and trade of goods. We find that artificial agents learn to make economically rational decisions about production, consumption, and prices, and to react appropriately to changes in supply and demand. The population converges on local prices that reflect nearby resource abundance, and some agents learn to move goods between these regions to “buy low and sell high.” This work advances the broader research agenda to enhance multi-agent learning by introducing new social challenges for agents to learn…

If I had To characterize 2023, I would say it was the year of the great business divide. Many aspects of the venture did not follow a single trend, but instead saw the emergence of extremes on both sides of the spectrum. Most startups continued to struggle to raise funds, but if you happened to be building in AI or defense, you could raise money as if it were still the high-end market of 2021. Exits remained at their lowest level here and years and we saw what could have been the biggest startup acquisition of all time get abandoned…

Speaker 1: If there’s one word that’s on every tech company’s mind lately, it’s ai, ai, ai, ai. There has been a rapid expansion of what AI systems can do, and over the past year you could find AI connected to all of our everyday technology, from composing emails to composing text messages. So what’s next for AI in 2024? Speaker 2: It’s as important as smartphones, as important as computers, as important as the internet probably, but nobody knows exactly how it’s going to be really important yet. So [00:00:30] All these companies are trying to experiment and see…

With the proliferation of computationally intensive machine learning applications, such as chatbots that perform language translation in real-time, device manufacturers often incorporate specialized hardware components to quickly move and process the vast amounts of data these systems require. Choosing the best design for these components, known as deep neural network accelerators, is challenging because they can have a huge range of design options. This difficult problem becomes even more thorny when a designer tries to add cryptographic functions to keep the data safe from attackers. Now, MIT researchers have developed a search engine that can efficiently identify optimal designs for…

Today’s post is about Akhil Raju, a software engineer in the robotics team. We first met Akhil in the second season DeepMind: The Podcastbut we wanted to get to know him better and hear more about his path to DeepMind. What sparked your curiosity about artificial intelligence (AI)?When I was young, I thought of artificial intelligence the same way I thought of magic. Yes, I wanted to hang out with R2-D2 and Optimus Prime – but I also wanted to go to Hogwarts. That is until I turned 12 and started entering LEGO robotics competitions. In that moment, I learned that…

Earlier this year, GitHub launched Copilot Chat, a chatbot focused on ChatGPT-style programming for organizations enrolled in Copilot for Business. Copilot Chat most recently came to individual Copilot customers — those who pay $10 a month — in beta. And now, GitHub is making Chat generally available to all users. Starting today, Copilot Chat is available in the sidebar in IDEs, Visual Studio Code, and Microsoft Visual Studio — included as part of the paid GitHub Copilot tiers and free for verified teachers, students, and maintainers of certain open source projects. “As the home of the world’s developers, we brought…

Artificial intelligence (AI) sent investors into a frenzy in 2023. It all started with MicrosoftJanuary’s $10 billion bet on artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, which develops the popular online chatbot ChatGPT. After September Amazon invested $4 billion in OpenAI competitor Anthropic. But these trillion-dollar tech giants weren’t the only ones snapping up AI assets. Everyday investors spotted several small-cap AI stocks with explosive potential throughout the year, including C3.ai (ALL INCLUDED -5.03%) and Upstart Holdings (UPST -7.47%). These stocks recorded gains of 159% and 217% respectively in 2023 and 2024 could bring more upside. Here’s why it’s not too late to…

How to ensure we benefit society with the most effective technology being developed todayAs CEO of one of the world’s leading AI labs, I spend a lot of time thinking about how our technologies impact people’s lives – and how we can ensure our efforts have a positive impact. This is the focus of my work and the critical message I bring when I meet global leaders and key figures in our industry. For example, it was at the forefront of the panel discussion on “Equality Through Technology” that I hosted this week at world economic forum in Davos, Switzerland.Inspired…
